School bus runs over 49-yr-old at Grant Road

A school bus with children on board ran over a 49-year-old man in south Mumbai on Tuesday evening. None of the children on board sustained injuries, though the man succumbed to his injuries later. Gamdevi police has arrested the driver of the bus.

The bus driver has claimed that the brakes of the bus had failed, leading him to lose control of the vehicle.

According to Gamdevi police, the incident took place on Tuesday evening around 5.30pm when Mushtaq Ahmed Siddiqui, 45, the driver of the school bus, was dropping students to their homes after school hours.

Assistant inspector of Gamdevi police Amol Damke said: “Siddiqui, who had taken children from a school, was driving the bus on the Kennedy bridge area of Grant Road, when he realised that the brakes of the school bus were not working.”

He added, “ He could not control the bus and ended up smashing into a taxi parked ahead. In order to lessen the impact of the collision, Siddiqui swerved to the left. As a result of this, the back end of the bus hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road.”

The Gamdevi police was informed about the incident and Siddiqui was arrested for causing death due to negligence and rash and negligent driving. Siddiqui, in his statement, told the police that the brakes of the vehicle had failed. Police have asked the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to verify the claim.
