There's more confusion in store for schools in the state. The school education department will give them three weeks to fill in 25% of their Class 1 or pre-primary seats with poor students.

The 25% will be extended to students from economically weaker sections, whose families have an annual income of Rs 1 lakh, and to those of disadvantaged groups including SCs and STs. But, as chief minister Prithviraj Chavan announced earlier, priority for admission will be given to girl students.

In a notification likely to be released on Thursday, the school education department will spell out the admission process that will begin from Friday.

To begin with, the government will put out advertisements in newspapers, which will declare the exact schedule of admissions. Schools will have to put up notices declaring the number of vacant seats and make admission forms available. It will also name the places within a 1-km radius of the school, as students from these places will be given priority.
