Security beefed up after hoax call to blow up CST

Security was enhanced at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) railway station, after the railway control room on Wednesday received a call from a person threatening to blow up the station along with five other undisclosed locations.

The call later turned out to be a hoax.

Police said the call came at around 7:50 am. The caller said that bombs had been placed at CST railway station and five other spots in the city. The caller warned that the blast will take place at 12:20 pm.

The call was traced to a Tata DOCOMO cell phone registered in the name of a Jacob Cirlce resident, Syed Iftikar. Syed in his statement to the police said that he had lost his mobile phone on New Year’s Eve and had registered a complaint at Azad Maidan police station. “ We are working on all possible angles,” said Railway Police Commissioner Tukaram Chavan.

Security was beefed up at all railway stations across the city, especially at CST. The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad was summoned and sniffer dogs were made to check trains coming in at these stations. Baggage and seats inside the trains were thoroughly searched. Commuters were randomly scanned with the help of hand held metal detectors.
