"Sena activists and supporters of Congress leader Narayan Rane gathered outside the railway station last night claiming credit for the new local train service with both the parties calling it their achievement. This lead to heated arguments and subsequent clashes between both the party workers as they began pelting stones at each other," Senior Police Inspector at Matunga Railway Station Sunil Deshmukh said.

Seven persons including three policemen were injured during the clashes and a rioting case has been registered following the incident, he said.

Police cane charged workers to disperse them and quell violence.

The railways have announced 14 special trains between Mumbai and Sawantwadi beginning on Tuesday ahead of the ten-day Ganeshotsav, as large number of devotees go to Sawantwadi to worship the deity.
