Senior citizen killed after garbage truck knocks her down at Malad

The Malad police have arrested the driver of the garbage truck, Vaman Matkar, 52, on charges of causing death due to negligence. The incident took place around 11.30am when Gangaben Jethva was walking near Liberty Garden.

A 65-year-old woman was killed on Saturday after a garbage truck knocked her down at Malad (West).

The Malad police have arrested the driver of the garbage truck, Vaman Matkar, 52, on charges of causing death due to negligence. The incident took place around 11.30am when Gangaben Jethva was walking near Liberty Garden.

According to eyewitnesses, the truck driver was speeding. Matkar was taking a turn, when the vehicle crashed into Jethva. Jethva was with another woman, who escaped unhurt, the police said.

Jethva was rushed to a nearby hospital, where the doctors declared her dead on arrival. Matkar was eventually released on bail.

In another accident which took place on the Western Express Highway in Borivli (East), four people were injured, after their car crashed into a trailer. The quartet — Nikhil Ojha, 35, Vijayta Pradhan, 31, Sheetal Sav, 26 and Sikandar Khan, 24 — were headed home in their company’s drop vehicle.

The accident took place around 7.30am. The car was crossing the Magathane flyover, when the driver crashed the Indica car into a trailer from the rear end.

The passengers sustained injuries, however, no case was registered, said officers at the Kasturba Marg police station.
