Would you like to send a bottle of water to a drought-prone family in Maharashtra?
You can now donate as much as you like via a unique initiative launched by the Don Bosco shelter in Wadala.
"We have requested people to donate drinking water in 1-litre bottles, 2-litre bottles or crates, which are easy to distribute in villages," says Father Godfrey D'Sa, member of the management board at the Don Bosco shelter. "Our aim is to accumulate 50,000 litres."
It all began on April 2, when Fr D'Sa received an SOS call from the Bosco Gramin Vikas Kendra, a sister concern based in the drought-hit Ahmednagar district 270 km away. A truck will leave on Tuesday.
"They said Ahmednagar was facing an acute shortage of drinking water and asked if we could send them some from Mumbai," says D'Sa. "So I contacted schools and parishes."
As word spread both online and offline, 10,000 litres were collected in five days for drought-affected families in villages in Ahmednagar and Beed.
"It was heartwarming to see so many students and residents help," said Father Jesu Robinson, coordinator at the shelter. "The campaign is spreading awareness about the hardships faced by people living in drought-affected areas," says D'Sa.
