Shiv Sena corporator from Mankhurd, Rahul Shewale, was elected to chair the vital standing committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday. Shewale, who would begin his third term as the standing committee chairman, won by seven votes to Congress nominee Asif Zakaria.

Addressing the acute water shortage Mumbai faces, Shewale supported speeding up completion of Vaitarna,
Pinjal and Gargai projects in the city.
From the 28-member standing committee, fifteen corporators cast their votes for Shewale while eight voted for Zakaria.
Samajwadi Party corporator Raees Sheikh abstained from voting while three corporators from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena did not show up for the election. Bharatiya Janata Party corporator Vitthal Kharatmol won the election for the chairmanship of education committee that was also held on Friday.
