Municipal Commissioner Swadheen Kshatriya on Wednesday said the work for basic repairs of the pedestal of the Shivaji statue at the gateway of India will be undertaken after the monsoon.
Work on repairing the 49-year-old concrete base plate will be done after taking advice from a heritage conservationist.
The statue that is 18 feet high and was crafted by veteran sculptor Sadanand Sathe and was inaugurated in 1961 by the first chief minister of the state.
The pedestal of the statue of Maratha warrior Chhattrapati Shivaji at the Gateway of India has developed cracks and is in a dilapidated condition.
But the state government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) do not want to take responsibility for its repairs.
Both agencies have been writing letters t each other saying they will not be carrying out the repairs as it is not under their jurisdiction.
The city engineer of the civic body and the ward officer visited the site on Wednesday and have given a report to Kshtariya.
