SIT files charge sheet in 2006 fake encounter case

The Bombay High Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), investigating the 2006 alleged fake encounter case of an alleged Chhota Rajan aide, filed the charge sheet in the Andheri metropolitan magistrate's court on Saturday.

Dismissed encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma is the key accused in the case.

On November 11, 2006, Rajan aide Ram Prasad Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiyya was killed in an alleged fake encounter at Nana-Nani Park in Versova.

After four days, advocate Ram Prasad Gupta moved a petition in the Bombay High Court alleging that his brother, Lakhan Bhaiyya, was murdered by the police officers.

The 1,150-page charge sheet filed against the 10 accused charges them with murder and criminal conspiracy.

SIT chief KMM Prassanna said 11 accused are still absconding, including nine police officials.

The SIT has also booked all of them under Sections 203 (giving false information respecting an offence committed), 344 (wrongful confinement for 10 or more days), 364 (kidnapping or abduction in order to murder), 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person).

When asked if the SIT would make any of the accused an approver in the case, Prassanna said: “We don't need any approvers to prove the case. We have made a strong case".

All accused are lodged in the Thane Central Jail.
