The heart of Mumbai was rendered powerless for about 90 minutes on Saturday afternoon, following a technical snag that saw computers blink off and ACs shut down in the prime business hub between Fort and Colaba, and in parts of Nariman Point.

Work at most government and corporate offices; including those of the municipal corporation headquarters, came to a halt during this period.

Power supply by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking tripped at 12.05 pm, due to technical snags in a transformer at Hutatma Chowk. Supply was restored at 1.30 pm.

The BEST has pinned responsibility for the outage on the BMC’s water department.

“Due to excavation work by the water department on Veer Nariman Marg, power supply lines from the Backbay receiving station to the Hutatma Chowk transformer were damaged, resulted in a tripping of supply,” said BEST spokesperson Manoj Warade.

The power cut in the business hub of the commercial capital could have affected many more government and corporate offices if it had been a weekday.
