Sound recordist, girlfriend forge documents to get loan

A sound recordist was arrested on Friday for allegedly tampering with his wife’s documents and getting his girlfriend to masquerade as his wife in a bid to secure a loan from a bank. His girlfriend was arrested too.

Salil Amrute, 33, who has composed music for some B-grade movies, allegedly asked Sonia Gupta, 37, an event manager, to pose as his wife, Arya Amrute.

“Salil and Sonia wanted to take a loan from a local bank where he has a joint account with his estranged wife Arya. Salil knew that Arya would not give her consent and therefore, hatched a plan to present Sonia as Arya,” said assistant police inspector Sudhakar Humbe from the Goregaon police station.

According to the police, Salil and Sonia allegedly replaced Arya’s photograph on her pan card with Sonia’s photograph. “They also wrote letters in the name of the society chairman, confirming their address,” said an officer, requesting anonymity.

When the bank contacted the society chairman to verify the documents, the chairman told them that he had not written the letter, said the police.

Salil and Sonia were booked on charges of forgery, cheating and impersonation and were presented before the local court, which remanded them in police custody till May 19.
