Patil, who has received several national and state awards for his work with the Pune traffic department, joined the Kalyan police two months ago. “Weak FIRs help arrested criminals get bail. Once released, they commit the same crime again knowing that they can use the legal loopholes again,” said Patil.

“The special cell has been formed to help the officials file FIRs that will nail criminals,” he added.

Dombivli mobile theft case, according to Patil, is a classic example of how perpetrators can be punished with strong FIRs.

The gang comprising four children and three men would ask the children to steal mobile phones. We proved that the children were kidnapped from Chhattisgarh.

“With a simple case of theft, the accused would have been out on bail in a month. With charges of kidnapping along with theft in the FIR, the accused have been in jail for the last seven months,” said Patil.
