'Speedy trial is the need of the hour'

The Arun Tikku murder case is not the first one to be transferred this year. In March, the murder of Amboli boys Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandes was also transferred to a fast-track court.

The Arun Tikku murder case is not the first one to be transferred this year. In March, the murder of Amboli boys Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandes was also transferred to a fast-track court.

Legal luminaries opined that several trials were being expedited after the Bombay high court in June asked trial courts to conduct hearing of criminal cases on day-to-day basis.

Criminal lawyer Sudeep Pasbola, president of City Civil and Sessions court bar association, said, "We need more judges and prosecutors to ensure speedy trial. Also, courts conducting the trial shouldn't be burdened with other work," he said

Lawyer Amin Solkar , said the mechanism for speedy trial already exists, "but is not implemented as the prosecuting agencies are not well trained and equipped."
