State Congress blames Pawar for rotten grains

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has held Union Minister of Food and Civil Supplies and Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar responsible for rotten grains in the government owned warehouses across the country.

MPCC has written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding that the existing food storage and supply policy be changed immediately. “The government should not hoard the wheat (or other grains) stock for years to rot but ensure that the surplus grain is supplied to the public,” said MPCC spokesperson Kanhaiyalal Gidwani. The issue is now being reported widely by Hindustan Times in its series ‘Tracking Hunger’.

The letter, signed by MPCC chief Manikaro Thakare, said the government should take new decisions on open market sales schemes in the interest of the common man. “This will help control rising prices of essential commodities,” it said. The letter is seen as an indirect attack on Pawar, whose party shares power with the Congress in the Centre and state.
