The programme has started at the Byculla, Mulund, Kurla, Panvel, Ambernath and Thane ITIs and will be expanded over time. "In next phase, we will start similar sessions at other ITIs in the city," said RR Asawa, regional director, Directorate of Vocational Education and Training (DVET).

Under pressure to reduce the number of road accidents in the state, the government decided to start motor training at ITIs last year. Now, 37 ITIs in the state offer the course, run by the DVET and the transport department.

"We wanted to start motor training facilities at one ITI in every district, where candidates will get proper training as part of our various accident-control measures," said SK Sharma, state transport secretary.

The course will cost Rs2,700 and is open to anyone 18 years or older.
