State govt for murder charge for foeticide

The Maharashtra government, fighting to reduce the rising cases of female foeticide, wants to be able to charge those involved in sex-selective abortions – including the woman undergoing the procedure – with murder.

The Maharashtra government, fighting to reduce the rising cases of female foeticide, wants to be able to charge those involved in sex-selective abortions – including the woman undergoing the procedure – with murder.

Public health minister Suresh Shetty on Tuesday said in the Legislative Assembly that the state would request the Centre to make provision in the existing law so that a couple and their family members can be booked for murder under a relevant section of the Indian Penal Code such as section 302. The sentence for murder can be life imprisonment or death penalty.
