Three forensic science laboratories (FSL) in the state will be fully staffed and well equipped by September end to ensure speedy disposal of cases, said the home department on Wednesday.
UC Sarangi, additional chief secretary, home department, informed the Bombay high court that they have sanctioned an additional 39 posts for the three laboratories in the state — Mumbai, Nashik and Aurangabad — and the Maharashtra public services commission has already initiated its recruitment process.
A division bench of justices BH Marlapalle and UD Salvi was hearing a petition filed by Santacruz-based businessman Aminuddin Saeed seeking action against assistant police inspector Balasaheb Khade for allegedly trying to settle a rape case by demanding a house and a car for the victim. The court summoned Sarangi after the Kalina FSL had not provided report of the voice recording verification on a voice sample submitted by Saeed wherein the demand is made.
Explaining the delay in providing test results, Sarangi said that each employee gives 40 hours a week, the approximate time required to work on one case. With increase in staff, more cases will be disposed of in lesser time. I personally supervised the three laboratories. After the recruitment, the strength of the labs will go up to 72,” said Sarangi.
