The government is likely to allow private schools to hike fees so as to earn up to six per cent on their expenses, said two independent sources, requesting anonymity, in the state education department. The High Court deadline for the government decision is July 15.

“The surplus earned by the school will have to be reinvested for educational purposes,” said a senior education official. “They will have to consult their Parent-Teacher Associations and the deputy director of education before increasing fees.”

The decision is similar to the previous resolution that the government had issued on fee hikes on May 21, which both parents and school managements had objected to in a meeting of representatives of both sides held on June 28. The meeting was held as per the court’s instructions to take feedback on government resolution.

Parents did not want schools to charge anything more than their expenses because they are registered with the charity commission and should not be making any profit. Schools, on the other hand, argued that as they are not government aided, they should be allowed to determine their own fee structure, free of government interference.
