State government has decided to set up a separate sub-committee to give approvals relating to environmental clearances for the growing number of construction works in the city.

“We have requested the Centre to allow us to form a separate sub-committee for approving infrastructure works in the city,” Minister of State for Environment Sachin Ahir said.
Presently, the proposals go to environment department which is burdened with permissions for the infrastructure and construction works.
The number of cases pending is huge and delays the overall process of approval, Ahir said.
The sub-committee, which would function under the state environment ministry, is expected to handle only Mumbai-related infrastructural cases, so that the work would start on time, he said.
Many of the infrastructure works here fall under Coastal Regulatory Zone areas. These works need special clearance and assurance to protect the environment in the respective areas.
