The new chief minister, Prithviraj Chavan presided over the meeting and was explained the intricacies of the state’s economic condition which is not very healthy. The state debt amounts to Rs 1.85 lakh crore.

Expenses are mounting every year because of the sixth pay commission. After three years of revenue surplus, the state was expected to have a revenue deficit of Rs 7,654 crore in 2010-11.

Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, who also heads the planning and finance department, told the media that the meeting discussed measures of spending more money on the welfare of economically weaker sections. “We deliberated on spending more on people who belong to the scheduled castes and tribes, and other backward classes.”

The meeting is more significant because it was Chavan’s first meeting on the subject. The state needs to get its plan size for the next financial year approved from the Union Planning Commission before going to the state Budget Legislative Session.
