Stopping eve-teasing through street plays

A group of boys will 'eve tease' a girl on the Santacruz skywalk next Tuesday. The public is invited to watch. This enactment of a scene that plagues women every day in the city is part of a performance being put up by a group of students of RN Podar School in Santacruz to see if this has any impact on onlookers or if they remain uninvolved.

The initiative comes in the wake of the Amboli double murders. “We want to see whether the crowd reacts, it’s a test of the public,” said Rashmi Mishra, the teacher incharge of the campaign. “Whoever steps forward to help will get a round of applause.”

On Friday, the school will conduct a panel discussion as well as hold a presentation for students on the Amboli episode, the problem of sexual harassment and how to guard against it.

On Friday, Akshara, a women’s rights organisation, will perform a street play called “Ched Chad Band Karo” at five different locations in Dadar. They will continue to do so at various other spots over the course of the fortnight, along with a signature campaign.
