Students, IITs all set to crack tough JEE

The Joint Entrance Exam for the Indian Institutes of Techno-logy (IITs) is on Sunday. It will be in two three-hour sessions.

Suraj Lakhani (18) is not going to look at his text books after 5 pm on Saturday. He has been studying for a six-hour exam for two years, so he feels he can afford to take an evening off.

“I have worked hard for this day since passing out of Class 10,” he said. “From college to coaching class to going home and studying, it has been a long two years. And I am hoping it pays off.”

As the exam draws closer, it is not only the students who are working hard. The IITs too are ensuring that the exam, one of the most competitive exams in the world, is conducted smoothly.

“We have done all that we could do to ensure that every eligible candidate can take the exam. Just in case, students have not yet received admit cards, they can go to their centres and take the exam,” said Dr T.S Natarajan, IIT-JEE chairperson, Madras, which is conducting the exam this year.

Coaching classes are advising students to expect surprises and not let it rattle them.

“To test those who have attempted the test only on the basis of set coaching, the IITs change the paper pattern. This confuses many students, but they should not let it affect them,” said Praveen Tyagi, head of IITian’s Pace, a coaching class.

“Also, students should not let their performance in the first test affect their second test. The best method is not to discuss the first paper.”
