The city requires 13 lakh million litres in all its six lakes to supply water without any water cuts throughout the year.

The city gets 3,400 million litres of water daily (MLD) as against a demand of 4,200 MLD.

In view of the festive season and with the lakes brimming to their fullest, the 15 per cent water cut was lifted last month.

“With the water stocks crossing the 13 lakh million litre mark, water cuts will not be introduced again,” said an official from the water department.

Last year, the water stock at the same time was 9.4 lakh million litre.

Meanwhile, even after having sufficient water in the lakes, the city is getting 50 MLD less water as the main water pipelines have corroded and if the pressure in them increases, they could rupture.

The city is currently getting only 3,350 MLD water.

The corporators of the standing committee also said that due to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s negligent attitude, more than 30 per cent of the posts in the hydraulic department of the BMC remain vacant.

According to the data available with the BMC, of the 1,030 scheduled posts in the water department 300 posts are vacant.
