Suspected Pakistan agent held in Pune

Pune police on Wednesday arrested a 24-year-old man, Vishambhar Tarachand Agar-wal, on charges of spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intell-igence (ISI) and said vital information was being passed on to him by a jawan attached to the Army’s Southern Command.

Pune police commissioner Meeran Borwankar said Agarwal, an employee at a local transport firm, had obtained key information about the Southern Command and its top officials from Army jawan Brijesh Singh. He was arrested when he arrived at Alankar Cinema near Pune railway station to hand over the information to an unidentified person.

While Singh was interrogated by officials of the Military Intelligence on Wednesday, Agarwal, a native of Haryana, was booked under the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and sections of the Indian Penal Code. He has been remanded in police custody for seven days.

“Agarwal had with him sensitive material like the phone numbers and other personal details of senior Southern Command officials, a hand-drawn sketch of the command headquarters in Pune and a CD containing vital information,” Borwankar said.

Borwankar said the police would ask the Command headquarters to hand over Singh to them for further investigation.
