The Thane session court on Tuesday acquitted suspended cop Ravindra Angre of all charges in the firing case registered against him by a Thane-based builder in June last year. Angre was arrested for allegedly firing at Mahesh Wagh on June 4, 2010.
Angre’s lawyer, Anil Kanade told the HT, “The prosecutor could not produce any direct or indirect evidence before the court. The additional session judge Pralhad Munde acquitted Angre of all charges due to lack of sufficient evidence.”
A complaint under sections 307, 504 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code and sections 3 and 27 of the Arms Act was registered against Angre in the Wagh firing case on June 4. Angre was arrested on June 15 and granted bail on July 16. The case was listed for hearing in April this year.
Angre, who was an assistant inspector with Thane’s anti-extortion cell was suspended in 2007, when a case of extortion and assault was first registered by Wagh and his brother Ganesh over some property dispute.
Angre served 14 months behind the bars and was released on bail in May 2009 and was acquitted in February this year. Angre said, “I was falsely implicated by the police. I want to join the police force and complete my remaining years of service.”
