The police are trying to ascertain why the teenager, Komal Solanki, a Class 8 student of SIES High School in Sion, took the extreme step. She left behind a suicide note that said: "Bye everyone. Wish you a happy Diwali".

Solanki lived with her mother and two siblings in a rented room at the Central Government Colony in Antop hill. Her father passed away a few years ago.

The owner of the flat, who resides in one of the rooms, was the first one to see Solanki hanging from the ceiling fan around 11.30am.

"The family is in shock," said sub-inspector SS Sarfare from Antop hill police station. "They are still not able to understand why she committed suicide."

Sarfare said there was a small fight in the house on Thursday evening.

"The girl was upset as her mother had scolded her for beating her younger brother. But they find it hard to believe that it impacted her so much that she would kill herself."

Solanki's mother, who works as a domestic servant, and the two younger children left the house around 7.30am on Friday. "The girl was alone. She locked the room from inside and hanged herself with the help of a dupatta," sad Sarfare.

The Antop Hill police have registered a case of accidental death.
