Two women were run over by a speeding tempo as they were crossing the road at Vasant Vihar in Thane on Friday. Jayawanti Solanki, 45, had come to the funeral of Ramesh Solanki, who had died on Thursday. Solanki and Ramesh’s sister-in-law Ganga Purbhia, 50, had gone to buy flowers for the funeral.

“The tempo driver Amol Kamble, 25, lost control of his vehicle owing to brake failure and hit the two women who died on the spot. The tempo then hit an autorickshaw driver Ashok Mishra, 36, who is in critical condition. We have arrested Kamble,” said Bajirao Ghuge, the senior officer of Vartak Nagar police.
The accident led to protests by angry residents who said the area was prone to accidents and the Thane municipal corporation was ignoring their demand for speed breakers. The mob surrounded Thane mayor HS Patil and the police had to use lathis to disperse the crowd. Bharat Mehta, an eyewitness, said, “This road has a slope where motorists tend to speed.”
Sandeep Malvi, TMC’s PRO said, “Civic chief RA Rajeev has issued orders to construct a speed breaker here on an emergency basis.”
