The Thane Government Railway Police (GRP) said the incident took place around 1.30am on Wednesday, when the complainant was returning home from work. She had boarded the train from Parel to go to Dombivli.

In her statement, the woman said the train had stopped at Kalwa railway station when a man in his 30s entered the compartment and snatched her mobile phone, worth more than Rs 41,000.

The woman went home and approached the railway police station in the morning, after which a case was registered under section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 379 (punishment for theft) of the IPC.

“The CCTV footage shows a man wearing a cap boarding the train at Thane and entering the women’s compartment. He had earlier boarded a Thane-bound train,” said an officer from the Thane GRP, on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

“We have showed the CCTV footage to the canteen staff, coolies and railway staff. No one has identified him yet. But the woman has identified the man seen in the footage. The investigation is on and we will soon arrest the accused,” said GB Thorat, inspector, Thane government railway police.
