The BKC cyber police on Thursday arrested three people for duping a widow of Rs 17 lakh on a marriage portal.
The trio assisted the main accused -yet to be identified-who had posed as the chief engineer of an oil rig in Scotland and asked a Chembur-based woman to marry him and then duped her.
According to the cyber police, the victim, Neha Sharma (name change), a widow, met met Olrick Holdore alias Alex on a marriage portal in January 2012. He was posing as an engineer employed with an oil rig in Scotland. He first asked her to marry him and then asked her for money to help bail him out of a dispute with his company. Sharma in return sent him Rs 17.22 lakh.
"When Alex kept demanding money, Sharma got suspicious," said an officer from the cyber police. Investigation led the police to three people who had created the bank account at the behest of the main accused. Senior inspector of BKC cyber police Nandkishore More confirmed the incident.
