House break-ins are a major concern for the city police, especially during the vacation period. Over the past few weeks, several such cases have reported in the eastern suburbs. To curb this, the number of policemen on patrol has been increased, especially at night.
According to statistics from the Mumbai police, 876 such cases were registered across the city from January 1 to May 8. Arrests have been made in only 298 of these.
Deputy commissioner of police Dhananjay Kulkarni said, “Of the 876 cases, 162 pertain to break-ins during the day, while the remaining 714 are for night burglaries. Accordingly, police patrolling has been increased, especially at night time.”
In 2015, the police registered 3,010 such cases and arrests suspects in 1,264 of them. In 2014, 3,055 cases were registered, and arrests were made in 1,165.
A police official told HT that some burglars even use Facebook to find out when potential victims will be out of the city, leaving their house vacant.
He urged citizens not to disclose such information either online or offline, saying, “Many people talk about their vacations at the market and even put signs saying ‘no milk’ or ‘no newspaper’ outside their homes. They should avoid doing so as these are such signs help burglars identify potential targets plan their break-ins accordingly.” Kulkarni added, “In the majority of cases, the burglar is someone known to the family. So posting about your upcoming holiday on Facebook can leave your house vulnerable to a break-in.”
