While tomatoes are being sold for up to Rs 60 per kg, an increase of Rs 20 from January 7, cucumber prices have also risen by Rs 20 in the same period and are at Rs 40 per kg.

"Prices have increased due to shortage of tomatoes. They will remain high until the new stock comes in next month," said Rajeshkumar Gupta, a retail vendor in Dadar.

Retailers are blaming a drop in stock for the price fluctuation.

"It is a normal supply-demand trend. Since the stocks are less, prices have increased and the reverse will happen once the stocks are in," said Dilipkumar Vaishya, a retailer.

"Tomatoes are a very basic vegetable used in almost every preparation. It is getting difficult by the day to tolerate soaring vegetable prices," said homemaker Varsha Kamdar.

But the price of ladies finger was unchanged in the retail market. Vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage and methi have also seen a decrease in prices.
