Traffic police book 202 drunk drivers in 2 days

The Mumbai traffic police department booked 202 motorists for drink driving during its two-day drive on January 27 and 28.

All of them were produced in court on Monday. Of the 202, 97 motorists were sentenced to simple imprisonment and the driving licences of 89 motorists were suspended.

The drive against drunk drivers was started in June 28, 2007. It is carried out throughout the city and mainly concentrates on main roads and junctions.

Internal roads are also covered by traffic policemen.

"The purpose of the drive is not to harass people, but to make sure that the city roads are safer for motorists as well as pedestrians. There have been some disastrous incidents involving drunk drivers,” said a senior traffic police officer, requesting anonymity.

Out of the total motorists booked for drink driving, most were booked from the eastern (57) and northern (55) suburbs. From the south, west, and central areas of the city, 24, 44, and 22 motorists were booked respectively.

In this year till January 30, the traffic police had registered 1,074 cases of drink driving.

Since June 2007, the traffic police have registered 76,235 cases of motorists driving after drinking.

While 42,490 persons were sent for simple imprisonment, the traffic police have suspended 37,390 licenses of repeat offenders.
