“Although there is awareness in the city, the drink driving arrests have not come down in the past three years since the drive started. The greatest example is the accident at Marine Drive early this month,” said Vivek Phansalkar, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

“NCC cadets are helping us re-launch the awareness campaign,” added Phansalkar. The 500 NCC cadets will stand at 16 major junctions of the city holding banners for two hours a day for the next six days.

Nitin Dosa, president of the Western India Automobile Association said the Mumbai traffic police are the first in the world to launch the anti-drink driving campaign and make arrests.

Police teams form London have come to the city to take lessons from them and this awareness drive will help bring down the number of drink drivers.
