Tree bank for a greener city

So far, officials of the tree bank have collected about 1.1 lakh such roots and other parts of trees that can be transplanted. “Trees which are alive but have fallen or have got uprooted can be transplanted after setting up the tree bank,” said L. Wani, the civic corporation’s garden superintendent.

Despite the delayed monsoon this year, officials said they had managed to uproot almost 1,500 trees.

That is more than twice the number of trees that had been lost during the monsoon last year. The total number of trees that fell this year is already equal to the number that fell in the city in the last two years.

According to data compiled by the BMC, up to September, 1,468 trees fell of which 624 were on road. The remaining 844 were located on private properties, outside the BMC building’s premises.
