The state saw peaceful celebrations of Shiv Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, on Friday.

The Maratha Reservation Struggle Committee had threatened to launch an agitation on Friday to demand 25 per cent reservation for the Maratha community in government jobs and education.
But they did not do so saying the chief minister had promised to look into their demand. Fifteen Maratha organisations have come together under the committee’s banner for the reservation demand.
Governor K. Sankaranarayanan garlanded the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Shivaji Park in Mumbai and Chief Minister Ashok Chavan paid a tribute to the 17th century Maratha king at Raigad. Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal and Mayor Shraddha Jadhav also offered their tributes.
