Tutor accused of raping 13-yr-old finally arrested

The Khar police on Wednesday arrested Ramchandra Nadar (42), the private tutor who had been on the run ever since he was charged, in May, with raping a 13-year-old girl suffering from learning disability.

Nadar was arrested from the sessions court after the court rejected his plea for anticipatory bail. "We received information that Nadar would be present for the hearing. After the bail plea was rejected, we arrested him," senior inspector Mangesh Pote of Khar police station said.

Police said Nadar, who has also been booked for molestation and unnatural offences, told them he had been in the city all along but had been unable to contact his kin. "He told us he slept in gardens, at railways stations and on the pavements," Pote said.

A double graduate in English and maths, Nadar was hired by the victim's parents in December to help her with her studies. The victim, a Class 8 student who has learning disability, had told the police that Nadar would come to their Khar (W) house for tuitions from 3 pm to 6 pm. The girl's parents would then be away at work, and she would be accompanied by a housemaid. Nadar allegedly sexually assaulted her when the maid dozed off in the kitchen.
