Two injured in vehicle pile-up on Sion flyover

Two men on a bike were injured as a result of a pile up involving a State Transport (ST) bus and two cars on the Sion flyover on Wednesday.

Vishal Ganatra, 25, who was riding a two-wheeler, sustained serious injuries on his back while pillion rider Karan Kataria, 25, escaped with minor injuries. Traffic on the flyover was stalled for over two hours because of the accident, said the police.

The police said the incident took place around 9.30am on Wednesday, when the driver of a Panvel-bound ST bus, on its way from Dadar, lost control while the bus was coming down the flyover.

The bus went on to hit a Maruti Esteem car, which was plying ahead. The police said as a result of the impact, the car collided with a Ford Fusion car in the same lane. "The vehicles ended up climbing on top of the divider on the flyover. Then a Unicorn bike, which was coming from behind, collided with the pile up. The two youngsters were flung from the bike as a result of the impact," said an officer from Sion police, requesting anonymity.

Ganatra and Kataria, both Dadar residents, were rushed to nearby Sion hospital. The police said the duo was on their way to a share broking firm at Ghatkopar where they work. The police arrested the bus driver, Milind Jadhav, 42, on charges of rash driving and endangering the life of others.

The police added that the bus passengers – none were hurt- were sent to Panvel in another vehicle. "Those seated in the other two cars escaped unhurt while the vehicles were partly damaged," added the officer.
