More than 60 members of the 103 kept away from the meeting that was held on the Colaba society’s premises. The AGM date was fixed in September.

Members saw a notice pasted on the society premises saying its power supply could be cut in view of the withdrawal of its occupation certificate (OC). “Most members had planned house-warming ceremonies this Diwali. The notice has upset them,” said a member who did not wish to be named because the issue was controversial.

Senior society member and Congress leader Kanhaiyalal Gidwani told the Hindustan Times that the management committee has assured the members that there were no irregularities.

“We have not received anything from the government so far. Our papers are perfect. Now it’s up to the government to clarify on the issue,” Gidwani said.

Society president Brigadier (retired) MM Wanchu and secretary RC Thakur did not answer calls.

A politician, who is a member of the society, told Hindustan Times that he skipped AGM to avoid embarrassment.

“I knew the media will be there hounding us for comments,” he said, requesting anonymity to avoid further embarrassment.
