Some of the city’s best urban planners, architects and anthropologists came together to discuss housing and redevelopment in Mumbai at ‘Housing without Developers’ at thinktank Studio X on Saturday.

The speakers included Javed Iqbal, a photojournalist; Sandeep Yeole, a housing activist; and Neera Adarkar, an architect and urban researcher. Students, professionals and activists attended.
The pros and cons of redevelopment by builders, the need for redevelopment projects and more houses, and the role of the state were discussed.
The workshop was part of an ongoing exhibition in New York. “The goal is to change the conversation around housing in the US, India and beyond and redefine the problem as a cultural and social or economic one,” said Reinhold Martin, co-curator of the exhibition and the coordinator of Saturday’s discussion.
