Earlier in the day, Deshmukh was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital for what doctors said was a “medical check-up”.

However, sources at the hospital said that Deshmukh has a problem with his liver. “He was rushed from the hospital to the airport,” said a doctor from Breach Candy Hospital.

Though hospital authorities were tight-lipped on the Congress leader’s condition, party sources also said that Deshmukh is likely to undergo a liver transplant.

At Breach Candy Hospital, Deshmukh was admitted under the care of Dr Samir Shah, hepatologist (liver specialist).

Till Monday evening, doctors at Global Hospital, who said Deshmukh was brought in a serious condition, were busy stabilising Deshmukh’s parameters.

Doctors at the hospital said that Dr Mohamed Rela, liver transplant surgeon, who has performed more than 1,200 liver transplants is expected to perform Deshmukh’s transplant surgery.
