Assistant commissioner of police Anil Mahabole, who is now in the eye of a storm after allegations of his involvement in journalist J Dey’s killing, has had a chequered career. A 1981-batch officer, Mahabole has seen both the highs and lows in three decades of his career.

An officer, who had known Mahabole, said he was handpicked by senior officers to probe the Telgi scam. “We used to go to him to understand how to take forward an investigation,” the officer said.
Mahabole has lately been named in many controversies. He was accused of implicating a fisherwoman and an inspector in an extortion case.
His first run in with Dey happened in 2005. An article filed by Dey, while he was working with HT, said Mahabole had links with the Dawood gang. Mahabole filed a defamation suit against the journalist.
