‘Will improve communication with fishermen’

After repeated complaints that the police failed to take action even after MT Pavit was spotted at Juhu beach on Saturday night, deputy commissioner of police (zone 9) Pratap Dighavkar said they would be maintaining better communications with the fishermen to avoid such a situation in the future.

Though the police still maintain that there was no lapse in security or action on their part, Dighavkar said that had they known that ship was seen floating near the beach, they would have taken prompt action.

“We have submitted a report to our superiors explaining had happened on Saturday. There was no slip on part of the Santacruz police. We have explained to our superiors that senior police inspector Madhukar Chaudhari went the beach as soon as he was informed about the ship” said Dighavkar.

However, Chaudhari could not spot the ship due to the rain and also since it was dark. “He should have informed the control room as soon as he received the information. That was the mistake that he made,” Dighavkar said.

Reportedly when news of the ship running aground at Juhu beach started to come in on Sunday morning, Chaudhari went to the spot and then alerted the control room.
