Woman attempts suicide in Byculla

A 48-year-old woman who has a penchant for making herself heard with public suicide bids was at it again on Wednesday when she threatened to jump off an 80-foot-tall hoarding in Byculla if the government did not pay for her vision-impaired daughter’s treatment in the US.

It took officials from the police and fire departments three hours to convince Vile Parle resident Sapna Pereira to call off the bid and bring her down to safety.

Pereira, who has been in the news for similar tantrums in the past (see box), climbed up the hoarding near the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) headquarters at around 11am by using the ladder behind it. The high drama which followed disrupted traffic movement in the area, the police said.

A police team from JJ Marg police station was rushed to the spot, but failed to convince her to come down. A fire brigade rescue team had to be then called in, and after much persuasion, Pereira was brought down with the help of the fire brigade ladder.
