Raul's surgery was not just a regular procedure. She suffers from a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder where her liver, spleen, stomach and appendix are situated on the exact opposite side in her body. This made her surgery far more complicated.

“This is the first such patient in India, who has been operated for a bariatric surgery.

The first such case was operated in the US,” said Dr Sanjay Borude, laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon, who operated on Raul who weighs 115 kg.

The doctor said Raul was a case of partial situs inversus, a rare medical condition where her heart even though was on the left side, her liver, spleen and stomach were on the opposite sides.

Raul who began gaining weight at the age of 15 contacted Borude a week ago with her weight issues. “She was morbidly obese had intermittent chest pain when she came to us. Besides, she had high blood pressure and other obesity-related problems,” said Borude.

“I plan to start working in my advertising agency the moment I leave the hospital,” she said.
