You need not fear water cuts this summer, says civic body

AS Tawadia, deputy engineer (planning and control), hydraulic department, BMC, said: “Considering the receding water levels, we have made a strategy to tackle with the shortage of water in lakes. The reserved water stock would be supplied if required.”

In comparison to 2011, there has been a sizeable drop in the useful water content obtained from the six lakes that supply water to the city this year. The total useful water content has dipped by 86,352 million litres.

Though rainfall levels have risen from 2011, water levels in Modak Sagar, Vihar, Tulsi and Bhatsa lakes have reduced by 0.02 to 0.16 m this year.

Water levels in Tansa and Upper Vaitarna lakes, however, have risen by 0.51 m.

Despite this, the civic corporation claims that it has made arrangements for the water stock to last through the summer.

“Mumbai faced major water cuts during summer in 2010 because of insufficient rainfall in 2009. But like last year, with sufficient rainfall, water supply during summer is unlikely to be affected this year,” said Tawadia.
