The fall has left Maduri Nikam with a fractured spine.

"She will now be a quadriplegic, unable to use her limbs" said Dr Sandhya Kamat, the dean of the hospital.

"She was possibly suffering from postpartum psychosis."

Nikam, an Ulhasnagar resident, jumped off the first floor of the hospital building from a window near ward number 11 (premature care unit) around 9.30 am.

She fell in the garden behind the building and was picked up by some patients' relatives and admitted to the emergency ward.

Nikam was in the hospital since August 26 taking care of her premature twins - a girl and a boy - who needed treatment after birth.

The twins were recovering well and were shifted to the premature care unit some days ago.

"She (Nikam) had been tense about the children and wanted to leave the hospital as soon as possible. She did not like the environment in the premature care ward as the nurses were rude," Nikam's husband, Ravi, 25, claimed.

Ravi, who works as a painter in Ulhasnagar, was having breakfast near the hospital when he heard about his wife's attempted suicide.

Inspector Anant Rahate from Sion police station confirmed the incident.
