“We have submitted our demands to the station master of Andheri station, the divisional railway manager’s office and the general office of Western Railway,” said Sunil Dalvi, secretary, Staniya Lok Adhikari Mahasangh of Shiv Sena.

With the number of commuters on the suburban section growing in large numbers, passenger groups have been making similar requests to the railways. “The railways should at least provide this facility at important stations,” said Suvarna Agarkar, member, Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh.

Some of the stations where the commuters have demanded separate counters are at Dadar, Kurla, Andheri, Bandra, Ghatkopar, and Thane.

“It’s not easy to have a separate counter only for women,” said a senior Western Railway (WR) official, on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media. “We will have to see how we might be able to accommodate it.”

“We will examine the proposal,” said Sharat Chandrayan, chief PRO, WR.

In December last year, Aditya Thackeray had met Union railway minister Mamata Banerjee and demanded separate compartment for senior citizens and college students.
