The performing arts have always worked as a means of creating awareness about social causes. Now, popular ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas will perform in the city tonight, to raise funds for displaced Kashmiri Pandits in order to help them conserve their rich cultural and social heritage.

“I feel the Kashmiri Pandits have always been deprived of their due. It’s unfortunate that being a part of India, you cannot go back to your own home and you have to live like

a refugee. When I met some people from this community a few days ago, I realised that they were struggling for funds for a project in Kharghar. That’s when I thought of performing for them,” says Udhas.

The event is being organised by the Kashmiri Pandits’ Association, which works for the protection, preservation and propagation of Kashmir’s cultural heritage. The proceeds from this concert will be used for the construction of a social and cultural centre called Sharda Sadan in Navi Mumbai. “I’m not charging anything for my performance. I just hope that the collection is good enough to support their initiative,” says Udhas.
