It seems composer and music director Sandeep Chowta and American jazz-fusion band Spyro Gyra go a long way. Three years ago, band members Jay Beckenstein, Scott Ambush and Tom Schuman individually worked with Chowta on his yet-to-be-released album ‘Matters Of The Heart’. Now, Chowta has collaborated with the band and has composed a track that will appear on Spyro Gyra’s next album.
“They wanted me to submit a composition for their upcoming album. They were looking for something leaning towards the Indian sound in terms of melody, but with strong elements of jazz,” Chowta says. A huge fan of the band, he mentions, “It wasn’t difficult to send in the right composition. I sent in two songs and Spyro chose the second. Arijit Singh (a Fame Gurukul reality show contestant) did the vocals and Shabbir Ahmed wrote the lyrics.”
Titled ‘Khuddah…’, Chowta says that his composition is essentially a Spyro Gyra styled number with a strong Indian melody. “The tune was always with me and the moment Jay (from Spyro Gyra) said he was looking for a composition, I decided to go with it. I was in New York recently, and heard the whole band playing my song. It sounded great,” he says.
Taking to slow
Though Chowta’s album Matters Of The Heart has been a long time coming, the composer is taking his time because he doesn’t want it to vanish from people’s memories. “I’ve been working on it for eight years and there are over 45 musicians in my album, including some from Brazil and Australia. I want listeners to go through the whole vinyl experience again, including footage and album artwork. I don’t want it to be something casual like downloading mp3 files from the web,” he says. Chowta is also bringing down blues guitarist Scott Henderson to Mumbai this Monday for a performance. This will be the guitarist’s second performance in the country after the first one last year that was also organised by Chowta.
