City artistes launch hip-hop music online

Music group, Microphon3, doesn’t believe in ‘selling music’.

Many budding artistes in the city feel that a lot of talent goes unnoticed because breaking out of the clutter is tough. Even though the growing live gig scene in the city has helped musicians, getting oneself on stage is still a challenge. And to do just that, a group of three musicians came up with an interesting plan — distribute their music on a website for free.

“We didn’t want to sell the music. People needed to hear what we were making, and we needed to get our music out there, for it to become popular,” says 26-year-old music writer and rapper, Tanmay Bahulekar.

“The response has been quite surprising. We have put up two songs right now, and will be putting another this weekend. It’s been a month since the music was uploaded and we’ve already been invited to about four gigs, which is awesome.” Bahulekar has been writing rhymes for over 10 years. And when he met Sandeep Sharma and DJ Chandu — his music producers today — at a friend’s house party, he could never have imagined what happened next.

The trio began their sessions as casual recordings in small studios around the city, and within a matter of four months had created over seven full-fledged sound tracks. Most of which have a quirky city characteristic behind it.

Bahulekar recently gave a power-packed rapping performance at Zenzi Mills, where he had a full house to entertain. Though the group still hasn’t decided on an official name for their album, the working title is The Back Road Sessions.
